Sadly, due to an attack piece by a group calling itself “Moving Longmont Forward” we’re forced to acknowledge the negative campaigning in order to set the record straight with Facts vs. Fiction.  Below is a copy of the piece sent “October 21 or 22”

Facts

  1. Those who frequently watch council meetings know that during Public Invited to be Heard, speakers are given 3 minutes to speak.  Yes, Bryan has “Cut off” speakers before they were finished, but only when the 3 minutes have expired - this has been the case with all speakers regardless if they have been speaking in favor of or opposed to Bryan’s opinion.  For greater detail on the subject, follow this link: “Silencing Free Speech?  ‘Not True’ say supporters of Longmont Mayor Baum”
  2. Bryan never “refused to support higher education for Longmont Latino youths.”  He voted against supporting a non-binding endorsement of the federal Dream Act. At the time it was called forward, it was an incomplete piece of legislation and it was a federal act.  Longmont City Council is charged with voting on local legislation, not federal.
  3. Bryan voted against the open carry gun ban because, “I don't want to give our employees a false sense of security.”  When you can see that someone is legally carrying a gun, a crime is less likely to occur in the proximity.
  4. Bryan voted to remove the Inclusionary Zoning requirement from the Affordable Housing program, thus allowing those who purchased “Affordable Homes” to be able to get out of the program without having to file Bankruptcy.  The Down-payment Assistance and Rental Assistance programs are still active components of Longmont’s Affordable Housing program.

(Note: this is a direct copy of the original; misspelled words/punctuation errors are the fault of the committee.)

  1. In 2009, Bryan’s donors gave in-kind contributions of $8414.14.  Of that, $2901.88 came from “Realtors and developers” - $200 of which was an “estimated” value for letting us use an office 4 nights to make local phone calls.  But even including that “contribution” the total equals less than 35% of the total contributions.
  2. The conversation in question (with a Solar Industry lobbyist, who was not a citizen of Longmont) was as follows:
    • Bryan “We voted it down and I would vote it down again” (referring to a solar subsidy the council voted down the prior week)
    • Lobbyist “Well, I urge you to reconsider...um...there’s economies that are a lot more dire straights than Longmont here that are offering up way better incentive programs then even the one you voted down...”
    • Bryan “then maybe you should go live there?”

  3. Bryan never visited Mexico during his 2 years in office.  He was invited to Japan by Chino’s Mayor, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our Sister City partnership.  Mayor Baum stayed in the home of a Chino couple to help minimize costs.  Mayor Baum chose not to attend the NLC conference in Washington DC with other members of the council - trips that cost-wise were on par with his Japan trip, because of conference fees, airfare, hotel and per diem.
  4. Twin Peaks Mall was in financial ruin when Mayor Baum took office.  His leadership over the last two years has been cited by NewMark Merrill, who just announced their purchase of the mall, as positively contributing to their decision making process to make the purchase.  Wal-Mart moved to a new, bigger location outside the Boulder County limits and has boosted Sales and Use taxes to the City of Longmont, and sales for Wal-Mart are up over 23% for the year.

The Moving Longmont Forward issue committee is registered by Teresa Lichti (740 Brookside Drive, Longmont, CO 80504,
